Easter Handicap 2002 at Bewl Valley Sailing Club

by Richard Kingsnorth 2 Apr 2002 17:14 BST

Bewl’s traditional Easter bank holiday races were held in near perfect conditions on Monday. Three handicap races were run on a simple triangle course with all boats starting at once and the results being calculated using average lap times.

In the event it appeared that there were three fleets, Flying 15s, RS’s and Wayfarers pulling ahead of Solos and Laser 4.7s who again were well ahead of the Optimists, Topper and Gull.

In the first race, after an impressive start George and Juliet Kingsnorth in their parents Flying 15, pulled out into an early lead which they regularly exchanged with Tim and Richard Turnill in their RS 400. But not enough of a lead to prevent Mike Harrison and Ken Hook from achieving a well deserved first position.

The second race might have been a repeat of the first only Harrison was seen doing 720 turns on the start line, and Kingsnorth broke his father’s new jib halliard!, allowing Adam and Richard Page to take first place in their RS 200.

Mike Harrison again showed his form in narrowly beating Paul Turnill (Laser 4.7) to take the honours in the third race and the series.
