2003 Bewl Blaster at Bewl Valley Sailing Club

by Richard Kingsnorth 3 Feb 2003 08:32 GMT

Perfect Conditions for the Bewl Blaster

Nearly 40 boats attended the annual handicap open meeting hosted by Bewl Valley Sailing Club.

With a westerly 3 - 5 and bright sunshine (in the morning at least), conditions could hardly have been better. Race officer Jay Williamson set a trapezoid course giving varied and testing conditions for the fleet which, although this is a predominantly asymmetric event, ranged in performance from a Dart 18 to a couple of Toppers.

As always in handicap ra ces, the interest (from the observer's point of view) focused on one design match races being held throughout the fleet. In particular, the Buzzes of Steve and Katie Restall and Simon Cory and Annie Smith, The Flying 15s of John Wardrop and Neil Cunliffe and Geoff and Simon Hilton, and a gaggle of Laser 4.7 (Alice Kingsnorth, Jo Bradley, Adam Sims and Ben Andrews) had some very close matches.

Consistency paid off for the Restalls who took first position and the Bewl Blaster trophy with 3 points. First youth was Alice Kingsnorth, in 8th position with 12 points.
