KSSA Annual Regatta at Bewl Valley Sailing Club

The KSSA Annual Regatta took place on Saturday 18th September at Bewl Valley Sailing Club and attracted a good turnout of 39 boats and 48 young people, assisted by an equally large number of supporting adults.

Before racing began several awards were presented by Councillor Bill Hayton, Chairman of Kent County Council. County sailing colours, presented to those who have contributed to the success of KSSA, were awarded to Nathan Brazil, Elizabeth Wauchope and Richard Maltby, with colours also re-awarded to Elliot Piper-Brown, Charlotte Fenn, Tom Goodey, Richard Thomas, Jack Turnbull and Stephanie Wicken. Richard Thomas also received the Ernie Large memorial award, to enable him to become a dinghy instructor. The Chairman’s Cup for Special Endeavour, KSSA’s premier award, was awarded to Kent team manager Neale Farr for the huge amount of effort he’s put into the Kent team over a period of several years, and the resulting success the team has enjoyed.

The sailing itself took place in light and fluky conditions, with significant shifts and large holes in the breeze making for very challenging racing. As a result no individual was able to sail a consistent series, with every race won by a different boat. Four races were sailed in total, with a break for lunch after two races.

The first race saw close racing at the front of the fleet between Tom Marks and Jo Pearson Farr (Wayfarer), Elizabeth Wauchope (Byte CII), Elliot Piper-Brown (Laser) and Tom Goodey and Richard Thomas (Laser Radials). The light wind seeming to hold the fleet together and prevent anyone from gaining a significant lead, allowing Wauchope to claim 1st place, Marks and Pearson Farr 2nd and Piper-Brown 3rd.

The second race was sailed on a triangular course, and this seemed to favour the double handed boats. Chris and Mark Thomas (RS 200) claimed victory, with Barnaby Blackstone and William Proud (RS Feva XL) 2nd, and Pearson Farr and Marks 3rd. Topper sailors Daniel Fenn and Edward Maynard took the next two places.

After lunch, racing continued on a trapezium course, which seemed to hand the advantage back to the single handers. Richard Thomas recovered from a terrible start to take the gun from Goodey and Charlotte Fenn (Laser Radial). However, 1st place went to Daniel Fenn in his Topper who was able to stick close to the Laser Radials and win on corrected time.

There was still everything to sail for in the last race, with the results still incredibly close. The wind dropped throughout the race, forcing the race officer to end the race early and use times from previous laps. Michael Calvert (Laser Radial) won from Chris and Mark Thomas, with Wauchope taking third, Goodey fourth and Richard Thomas fifth.

Next year will be our 50th Anniversary so the KSSA Annual Regatta will be the one to compete in to challenge for the prestigious trophies. KSSA are organising two special events for the Anniversary – for details contact sec@kssa.co.uk. Remaining events for 2010 can be found at www.kssa.co.uk.
