2002 Summer Youth Regatta at Bewl Valley Sailing Club

by Richard Kingsnorth 20 Aug 2002 13:18 BST

Bewl Valley Sailing Club's Youth Regatta was held in bright sunshine and a force 2 - 3 wind which gave competitors good racing if not exciting sailing.

Nearly thirty youngsters turned out for the event, twenty of which joined the main fleet while the rest took part in beginners races round a short course.

The main fleet sailed four races (three to count) around a triangular course. Close handicap racing was achieved b etween boats as diverse as an RS 600 (Sam Pascoe) and four Optimists. Results were calculated using average lap times.

At the top of the fleet James Royston, Nicholas Bush and Wesley Porter had very close racing in their Laser Radials but, on handicap, had their positions broken by Sam Pascoe, Andy Fielder (Topper) and Fiona Harlow (Optimist).

Competitors on the beginner's course had a practice race and a series of four races. All improved immensely. Some unable to sail the first beat went on to complete all four races. Results were, 1st Topper, Eleanor Holroyd and 1st Optimist, Jonty Brooks.
