Over 150 boats take part in the Bassenthwaite Sailing Regatta

by Francesca Breeze 30 Aug 2012 08:55 BST 4-12 August 2012

This year's Lake District Bassenthwaite Sailing Regatta (4 to 12 August) was again sponsored by dinghy insurance provider, insurance4dinghies, and attracted over 150 entrants.

Crews competed in 10 classes and winners took to an Olympic-style podium to receive their prizes.

In his prize-giving speech, Commodore Stephen Kirkpatrick called the nine-day event 'a journey'. He outlined how the Regatta had progressed from the aftermath of a freak deluge and some rather wet campers over the first weekend to glorious sunshine and warmth mid-week, drying everyone and everything out.

He observed that the lack of wind did little to stimulate sailing, but the ability to watch Team GBR Olympic sailing successes on the Club's large screen television made up for this.

As the week progressed, stronger winds and sunny skies created ideal conditions for the competing sailors and their supporters.

Stephen also thanked Insurance4Dinghies – or I4D as they are known within the sailing fraternity – for their support.
