Audi Laser Eurocup - Lake Como, Italy Day 3

by Lasersailing.com 13 Jul 2000 12:53 BST

Round 2 - Audi Laser Eurocup from Lake Como, Italy

Snow topped mountains provided a spectacular backdrop as racing eventually started in round two of the Audi Laser Eurocup. Sixty four Laser 4000s were first out of the blocks with Laser 5000s and Laser EPS getting in to gear soon after eleven o'clock this morning. A perfect 12-15 northerly wind was blowing along Lake Como when the first gun of the day was fired.

Simon Cooke & Italy's Luca Dragonetti were the class act of the day with a 1,1 scoreline. Simon competing at his first ever Eurocup event has already booked his place at the Sydney Olympic Games for New Zealand in the 470 class. On sailing the 4000 for the first time he said "With no 470 racing happening right now I was looking to keep race smart, my crew Pete Nichols regularly sails in the 4000 fleet and had said how competitive it is, so I thought I'd give it a go." His crew Pete Nicholas sailing with wife Lisa are currently in 15th place. Jason Kirk and Scott Dawson are lying second overall counting a 3,2 scoreline, with Richard Clampett and Grace Clark in third place overall . However pre regatta favourites Doug Baker and Ricky Tagg faired less well ending the day 6th and 19th respectively. Britain's own Olympic medal hope, Ian Walker was the comeback kid of the day rounding the windward mark in 60th place in race one only to pass 37 boats on the run to eventually finish a credible 9th place, he is currently lying 5th overall.

Andy and Dave Richards having won the first round of the Laser 5000 Audi Cup in La Baule, France were looking for a repeat performance, but they know Alex Tobutt and Stuart Appleby are in pursuit and Joe Llewellyn & Mark Tait are looking for victory. Only 3 points separate the top three boats going into tomorrow's final day of racing, it's anyone's game.

The 88 boats competing are hoping for good winds tomorrow to get in the lost races from the first two days. It's all to play for tomorrow...
