MONARCH TEAM UNLIMITED CLINCH TITLE ON LAST RUN
Alan Hillman & Rob Andrew just did enough to hold onto their lead in exciting racing that saw them regain the overall lead on the final run on which they passed 6 boats.
On finals day every race counts - and how that must have hurt Adobe's Pete & Lisa Nicholas. A clear second before today's last two races, they had a shocking day, finishing 14th and 20th after having won 5 races earlier in the week. At the same time, Konigsberg simrad's Hugh Watson & Lil managed a fight back on finals day. After a dreadful day on the slop of the bay yesterday, they had three top six results today to regain a top ten finish - at tenth place.
At the front of the Laser 4000 fleet, there were four main contenders other than Adobe, and they all had their chances to win the regatta. Preferred IT had suffered earlier in the week, with Hilary Sutton ill, Douglas Baker had
spent a day with Emma Healey in the boat, and the lack of practice showed in the results. However, Doug & Hilary turned on the style and scored a 1st and a 3rd to race up the leader board. In front of them in the final race, Gul &
Audi Foundation were scrapping for the championship. Overnight leaders Monarch Team Unlimited had scored 12 points in the first race of the day, whittling their lead over Gul & Audi Foundation to just 5 points, and as
Gul's Rob Lark & Dave Chisholm overtook Audi Foundation's Ricky Tagg & Vanda Zadorozny on the final hoist they must have thought they led the regatta. Alan Hillman & Rob Andrews were outside the top ten and looking to have lost
it. Gul took the bullet, only to see Monarch Team Unlimited start a charge up to the fleet.
In a huge gust they kept it together whilst many boats ahead of them foundered. Whitegrove's Mark Richards & Sam Hoyland had a collision with Tom Offer & Oli Wells, taking them both out of the running, whilst Konigsberg simrad got caught up with Gul & Audi Foundation's fight for first and were pinned out from the finsh, having to drop the kite and come back upwind. Alan & Rob brought Monarch Team Unlimited in safely in 4th place, taking the title by 2 points, and there second win in the Audi Laser Euro Cup Tour.
AUDI FOUNDATION WINS LASER.EPS TITLE
Andy White has dominated the week's sailing, winning ten of the thirteen races and showing his hiking style and knowledge of the boat is more than enough to get to the head of the fleet. Andy won the first two races of the
final day, and only a capsize in the lead, and the fact that a little over-confidence had caused him not to tie in the daggerboard, saw him finish in third. The final race winner was Laser Scotland's Andrew Knowles, who seemed always destined to be bridesmaid with a string of second places.
Improving through the week was Hawk's Adrian Brunton, a former Laser 5000 sailor, who definitely missed his trapeze wires after a long hike. Adrian won the slalom event and a second in the final race saw hime comfortably third overall.
The action now moves to Lake Como in northern Italy, where the final leg of the Audi Laser Euro Cup Tour will be played out in sunshine and thermal breezes, with the aroma of good food and strong coffee never far away.
