August 9th

In July, I went to the Feva World Championships at Bruinisse in Holland with Matt Whitfield and his family – which was a really excellent event. We stayed in a holiday park close to the venue (with pool and mini golf course).

With so many other Feva sailors staying there we had a good time. The Feva class is very friendly and the event was very well organised. The wind was very strong to start with, which was quite challenging – we capsized while leading the first race and dropped back to eighth, so not a great start for us.

We had a problem with the kite in race two but managed to win and then had to sail race three without a kite, but we still managed to finish third. We fixed the boat that evening and didn’t have any more problems.

As the week went on we gradually improved our downwind speed and boat handling, coping with both the strong winds and the light stuff later in the week. By the end of the 11 race series we were counting three race wins, a second, three thirds, a fourth and a fifth, which was good enough to win the Championship from close rivals Owen Bowerman and Charlie Darling who also had three race wins.
