Cadet Indicator at Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy

by David Elliott 1 Jun 2010 08:24 BST 29-30 May 2010

Clear victory for Royal Lymington pairing

With only two races completed on Saturday and with those restricted to the Gold Fleet, competitors were delighted to arrive on the Sunday to bright sunshine and a fresh westerly breeze which ensured four races were completed. There was even enough time to come ashore for lunch! A full complement of 81 Cadets were on the water by 10am and making their way out into Portland Harbour to sail a triangular course followed by two windward/leeward loops for the Gold and Silver Fleets and one less loop for the Bronze Fleet.

Two races were scheduled before lunch. The first race of the day saw Katie Barr & Scarlett Anderson from Corinthian Otters sailing 8435 first at the windward and steadily extend their lead to take the honours. Abigail Croft & Alex Page from Frensham Pond sailing 8363 took second place having improved from fourth with Fishers Green brothers Oliver & William Palierakis third in 9005, again having made up a number of places. Mary Henderson & Annie Sibthorp from Salcombe/Itchenor in 7630 were fourth, Nick Sutton & Chris Sycamore from Corinthian Otters sailing 7514 fifth and second-placed overnight pairing James Dodd & Max Crowe from Royal Lymington in 9673, sixth. Overnight leaders Henry Mills & Robert Keen from Waldringfield in 8445 were eighth.

The final race of the morning saw Henry & Robert lead at the first windward from Abigail & Alex, with Edward Cummings & Katie Hinde from Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond third in 9028. Mary & Annie were fourth, with Ben Binmore & Martha Jones from Royal Torbay fifth in 8440 and Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne from Frensham Pond sixth in 7274. By the second windward, Abigail & Alex held a short lead over Mary & Annie and a close-fought battle continued right up to the line, with Abigail & Alex taking the gun by the closest of margins. James & Max were third, Ben & Martha fourth, Henry & Robert fifth, with Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown from Fishers Green in 8910, sixth.

With the wind veering to the north-west, the start of the afternoon’s first race was delayed as the Race Officer reset the course. Andrew Smith & Rory Burdock sailing 9243 led at the windward from fellow Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond pairing Edward Cummings & Katie Hinde in 9028, with Nick Sutton & Chris Sycamore in 7514 third. Max & Francesca Ingall from Fishers Green in 8855 were fourth, Corinthian Otters pairing Sam & Joe Barr in 9027 fifth and Henry Mills & Robert Keen sixth. By the second windward, Nick & Chris and Max & Francesca had opened up an extended lead, but the chasing fleet hauled them in over the next loop. Max & Francesca took the gun from Ed & Katie with Henry & Robert third.

The final race started at 4pm with cloud covering the course. James Dodd & Max Crowe scored their second bullet of the event, followed home by Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne, with Max & Francesca Ingall third. Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick from Fishers Green in 9635 finished fourth, with Mary Henderson & Annie Sibthorp fifth and Oliver & William Palierakis sixth.

Counting two bullets, a second, a third and a fifth, James Dodd & Max Crowe were worthy winners of the Weymouth indicator. Six points behind them were Henry Mills & Robert Keen, with Max & Francesca Ingall third. Corinthian Otters crews dominated the Silver Fleet with Sam & Joe Barr first and Loni Lilienthal & Ben Barr second. Oliver Hudson & Sam Wrankmore from Frensham Pond in 9360 dominated the Bronze Fleet with four bullets, with Joe Chadwick & Nicholas Latham from Fishers Green runners-up in 9317.
