The Annual Penguin Trophy at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club sailed in Lymington River Scows owned by the Clubs Junior division was raced this year in a strong South Westerly wind. All boats were reefed but with jibs to help balance the boats and eleven hardy old and less old turned out to wash away the Christmas cobwebs.

As the older members have discovered for some time now, the younger sailors trained at the Club are proving rather more skilled at getting away at the start and around tight courses than they are. There were two heats of two races held first with the top three from each fleet going forward into the finals where almost without exception the youngest six crews moved on to the finals.

It was decided that as the racing was so close that there should be three races and no discards. Race two nearly spelled disaster for some, four of the six boats were OCS, all returned but in doing so had no chance of catching the two leaders and the leaders fom race one Poppy & Jaz Husband finish at the back of the fleet.

The results now all pinned on the last race where three boats including one of the favourites Sophie Weguelin managed to get entangled with the Club jetty only a second or two before the start leaving them with no chance for the trophy.

Charlotte Lawrence crewed by Robyn Stock sailed there best race of the event, winning comfortably and taking the Penguin Trophy by one point.

Overall Results:

1st Charlotte Lawrence and Robyn Stock
2nd Will and Claire Rusden
3rd Poppy and Jaz Husband
4th Sophie and Pip Weguelin
5th Jonathan Clegg and Hannah Yuill
6th Rupert Stock and Mel Clegg

Principle Race Office - Chris Baldwick

As usual thanks for all the volunteers, on and off the water who made this another success.
