The Henri Lloyd Spring Series of racing ended on a high note on Sunday at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club. Competitors in the four classes enjoyed improved conditions after several weeks of minimal wind put paid to their racing ambitions. But there was no stopping the events this time, even if a strongly ebbing tide made it hard going for some of the some participants.

With a light east north easterly wind, Class One got off to a clean start. Unfortunately some confusion over the course meant half of the Class 1 & 2 fleets went the wrong way. In Class 1 Race 9 was ultimately won by No Doubt with Deuce taking second place.

Competitors in Class 3 and the Folkboats sailed the correct course, but the strong tide hampered the fortunes of several competitors who were unable to finish. Class 3’s Roller Coaster pulled out a reasonable lead on the second beat only to see it reduced on the run. However on the last beat the wind died off just after Roller Coaster crossed the line, with only Juggler managing to struggle across the line prior to the cut off time. In the Nordic Folkboats, the light breeze and increasing tide meant only one round could be sailed in the first race, which was won by Crackerjack.

The Committee Boat moved further inshore out of the tide, and the prospects were not looking good for another race. Just as the cut off time for racing approached, the wind piped up from the south-east and a new course was quickly set. With six to eight knots of breeze, two rounds of a short windward/ leeward course were sailed by all classes.

A clean start in Class 1 was led by Jeba and Zarafa. They sailed away from the fleet and eventually Zarafa won on handicap followed by Jeba. Only three Class 3 boats came to the line, with Juggler finally taking 1st place by a margin of 15 seconds on corrected time. Moonraker managed a convincing first place in the Folkboats.

This was the last race of this year’s Henri-Lloyd Spring Series and a prize giving was held at the Club afterwards. The Commodore’s Wife, Marilyn Holmes, presented glassware and Henri-Lloyd vouchers to the prize winners.
