Classic & Vintage Regatta at Bristol Avon Sailing Club

The Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association was blessed wih georgeous weather and gentle winds at their second regatta of the season on the Avon river with the Bristol Avon Sailing Club on the 27/28 July.

17 boats took part, 10 local and 7 visitors. Boats varied from the 1948 International 14 of Andrew Thornhill, through four beautiful Fireflies, to a 1960's Finn. The wind on both days was fickle and rather feeble allowing the experienced river sailors the opportunity to excel in the ch allenging conditions.

Making the best of the gently winds with a clean sheet of first places was Rupert Whelan sailing single handed in Saskia - Firefly F2324, returning to BASC after a few years lake sailing and showing that the time away from the river had done nothing to slow him down. Second place was taken by the local experts, Bob Corefield and Christine Higham in Mercury 37 and third was Ed Bremner in Firefly F2942 from Baltic Wharf Sailing Club.

An unusual concern for the race team was the juvenile grey seal hogging the ramp A beautiful day, Saturday 17th May, met the eight entrants for the Merlin Rocket Vintage Series open sponsored by Craftinsure at Tamesis, battling for the Southcott and Porteous Cups (Southcott for the overall, Porteous for the winner of the last race). Hitting a mark is one thing, setting up camp on it is something else altogether After a testing, not to say bruising opening day for the Lowrider Moths at Stone Sailing Club the concerns were that Day 2 would be the same but colder. The scows, although not the quickest, looked to be having the best fun down the reaches As many of the early arrivals to Stone Sailing Club considered getting an early practice sail in, some of the wiser minds stayed in the bar as the conditions were hardly welcoming.
