The 'Oscars' of British boating, the British Nautical Awards, today officially open nominations for the 2001 Awards, scheduled to take place on the 4th of January 2002 in London.
The British Nautical Awards (BNA) offer the most prestigious accolades in yachting and boating to recognise the excellence of people, boats and equipment within the marine industry. The Awards have been developed to reflect the growing reach of watersports and indeed developments within the
yachting and boating industry as a whole. Jackie Phillipson, Chief Executive of the British Nautical Awards said, "The Awards are very special in that they embrace young people and adults, professionals and amateurs as well as recognising important developments within the industry itself.
Britain has always been a premier maritime nation and every year the excellence and innovation recognised at the Awards ceremony pay tribute to this fact."
Different from other major Awards ceremonies, anyone can make nominations using the official Awards Nomination Form available from the BNA. Nominations close on the 28th of September 2001, after which a panel of judges made up of distinguished men and women from the boating world will make the final decision of who will be revealed winners on the night.
The categories for this year's British Nautical Awards include:
- YJA Yachtsman of the Year
- MDL YJA Young Sailor of the Year
- Challenge Business Offshore Yachtsman of the Year
- Inshore Yachtsman of the Year
- Peters Plc Power Yachtsman of the Year
- Sunseeker Endeavour Award
- Sealine Media Award
- Motor Boat & Yachting Motorboat of the Year
- Yachting World Inshore Sailboat of the Year
- Yachting World Offshore Sailboat of the Year

Last year, household names such as members of the highly successful British Olympic Team shared the most prestigious award of the year, the BT YJA Yachtsman of the Year, while Sam Carter (16) and Robert Graves (13) received the MDL YJA Young Sailor of the Year Award. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal attended the Award ceremony and nominations also included Ellen MacArthur, who joined guests via a live telephone link during the gruelling and famed Vendee Globe Race.
2001 will be the third official British Nautical Awards ceremony, though some of the Awards, such as the highly acclaimed 'YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award' have a much more established history, having been inaugurated in 1955 by Sir Max Aitken.
A glamorous and high profile event, it is an honour to be nominated for an Award, and a symbol of status within the industry to attend. Always a full house, tickets to this black tie event cost £125 and are already quickly disappearing.
