Abersoch Mirror Week 2026 Day 5

by An Avid Spectator Somewhere Near You 21 Aug 15:38 BST 17-21 August 2026

The grand finale of Mirror Week burst into life with all the drama, excitement, and mild organisational panic we've grown to adore — and that was before anyone even attempted to point a dinghy in the right direction.

The Party That Nearly Wasn't

Last night's social extravaganza was on course to become the soggiest damp squib in SCYC history when the locally-famous DJ simply... didn't. Didn't arrive. Didn't text. Didn't even send a carrier pigeon.

His fans were crushed. His reputation trembled. His speakers sat in the corner like abandoned pets.

But fear not — Ed Lucas and the SCYC bar team sprang into action like excited meerkats. With record-breaking quantities of J2O and Vimto fuelling the crowd, they somehow resurrected the ancient PA system normally used for Speedy Dave's Smooth Radio sessions in November.

What followed was a musical miracle stitched together with bravery, creativity, and just a hint of panic. The Rear Commodore Finance is still smiling — saving money on a DJ is the kind of thing that makes a spreadsheet positively purr.

Safety Armada: The Unsung Heroes (and Occasional Lifeguards of Sanity)

The legendary armada of safety boats assembled once more under the ever-watchful eye of Bill Allen — Safety 1, Supreme Commander of Briefings, and possibly the only man who can deliver 150 identical 09:00 speeches without blinking.

Yes currently at 155 and counting well done Bill.

His loyal lieutenants gathered around him, hanging on his every word (or at least nodding convincingly while thinking about breakfast). Thanks to Bill and his crack team, SCYC continues to run bigger, better, and occasionally wetter events. Their reliability is the stuff of folklore — like lighthouses, but louder and with more petrol fumes.

A huge thank you to Bill, John, Les, Mark, Charlotte, Steve, Justine, Tim, Mike, Brian, Trevor, Gary, John, Dave and the rest of this week's volunteers whose names we didn't catch because they were too busy actually doing useful things. You're heroes — even if some of you hide behind sunglasses and pretend you're not crying with exhaustion.

Today's Action (Through Pete "The Lens" Hawkins' Magic Camera)

No results yet — prize-giving is at 1600 — but Pete Hawkins has once again captured the day's drama, glamour, and occasional accidental-capsize-artistry.

Harvey's Smart Rib and The Red-Sail Conspiracy

We've mentioned Harvey's smart rib before, but as chief event organiser he has been instrumental — along with Ed Lucas — in pulling the whole circus together. SCYC salutes you both. Loudly. With applause. And possibly with leftover Vimto.

Spoiler alert: We've said it before and we'll say it again — the winner will have red sails. But a red boat too? Surely that's just showing off.

Prize Giving Approaches...

The bar is already bracing itself for the incoming tidal wave of Mirror sailors. The clan will gather, the drinks will flow, and someone will definitely lose their voice cheering.

I'll sign off now and return tomorrow with the full list of winners, losers, heroes, villains, and anyone who capsized in a particularly artistic manner.
