Abersoch Mirror Week 2026 Overall

by An extremely impressed spectator 22 Aug 16:25 BST 17-21 August 2026

If you ever needed proof that Mirror sailors thrive on drama, Friday 21st August delivered it in style. Two perfect races were planned in a neat little Northerly 10-12 knots - the sort of breeze that makes PRO Phil rub his hands together like a man about to finally get two clean starts way.

Naturally, the fleet disagreed.

After two false starts, several questionable life choices, and the traditional outbreak of "Who, me?", Phil unleashed the Flag of Doom. This worked instantly, as it always does. A couple of boats were publicly shamed for their misdemeanours, everyone behaved like angels, and Race 9 finally got under way.

Friday: The McGrane Masterclass

Friday belonged to the McGranes, who tip-toed through the tricky starts with the elegance of people who definitely didn't cause the earlier chaos.

A 2nd and a 1st pushed them up to 2nd overall, proving once again that Mirror Week is the spiritual home of role reversal — Dad Ben crewing for daughter Evelyn, who is clearly in charge and should probably be running the country.

Gold Fleet: The Red Rocket

The overall winners were the red boat we all admired yesterday — Matt McGovern, with Albie and Bodhi crewing like absolute legends.

They won comfortably, consistently, and with the sort of calm competence that makes the rest of us wonder if they've secretly installed a small engine.

Completing the podium were Nick Charles & Seb in Skittles, who not only sailed brilliantly but also used the prize-giving to remind everyone that the Mirror Worlds 2027 will be held in Poole Harbour at Parkstone YC.

Consider this your official warning.

Silver Fleet: The Battle of the Nearly-Golds

After Wednesday's split, the Silver Fleet turned into a delightful scrap featuring boats who were very determined to prove they should've been in Gold.

The podium:

1. Elsa Nicholas - 19th overall
Ottille & Xanthe Humphrey (Newley SC)
2. Simply Gorgeous - 26th overall
Alistair Dickson & daughter (Royal Anglesey YC)
3. Crackerjack - 31st overall
Guy & Bella Jackson (SCYC)

Gaff-Rigged Fleet: The Wooden Warriors

This was arguably the most competitive fleet of the week — four boats finishing 52nd, 53rd, 55th, and 56th, proving that gaff-rig sailors are built differently.

Topaz (George Edwards & Teddy Allison) took the win by half a point, beating Globbits (George Coop & Nathaniel Pritchard Jones) to claim the beloved Nutkin Galleon — a trophy so beautiful it should probably have its own security detail.

Special mention to Thetis (Charlie Merrick & Oscar Jackson), combined age 20, who finished every race, including Thursday's spicy conditions.

Winner of the Young Sailors Award, and future destroyers of adult fleets everywhere.

The Irish Invasion

The Irish contingent arrived with enthusiasm, charm, and a tug-of-war team that... well... let's just say it was spirited rather than successful.

They joined every event with gusto, humour, and a level of sociability that made the rest of us look like hermits.

We sincerely hope to see them again next year — ideally with a slightly larger tug-of-war squad.

The team Ireland girls in Bluebelle Millie Nelson and Hannah O'Mera swept all aside them and won the prestigious Tish Fildes Plate so you will most definitely have to return next year..

Additional Awards & Final Thoughts

And now, to the final flourish of the week — the awards that truly capture the spirit, chaos, and creativity of Mirror sailing.

Hei Hei & The Turner Sisters

The Turner sisters of Hei Hei graced the beach in a different costume every single day. Mermaids on Monday, Turtles on Tuesday, possibly tax accountants on Wednesday — nobody is quite sure and penguins on Friday... Their award was extremely fitting. Well done indeed.

Seamanship award

Crazy Cat and Kamikaze two local boats who couldn't be separated in more ways than one..well done to all the crews involved really too many to mention here.

The first wooden boat

Chris Massey and Annabelle in Little Wing 22nd place from Hollingworth Lake.

Next Year

Dates have been set for 2027: 15th August to 20th August. And it's the 30th anniversary of the event, so rumours are swirling that a special commemorative T-shirt may be commissioned.

Prepare yourselves. Fashion history is coming.

A Final Thank You

To all competitors who travelled far and wide — your enthusiasm, energy, and joie de vivre lift the whole event. You inspire the young sailors, terrify the PRO, and delight the spectators. Long may it continue.

Until next time...

A very impressed spectator
