Mirror Open at Overy Staithe Sailing Club

It's been a busy few days at Overy Staithe SC, with the club hosting the final 'harbour' day of North West Norfolk Week on Friday 14 August, their Clinker Open over the weekend of 15 and 16 August and then their Mirror Open, for the Timmy Roy Trophy, on Monday 17 August.

The rules for the open are simple - any Mirror can compete but they must have helm and crew - no single handers allowed, and spinnakers are not allowed. Race Officer Bernard Clark held a briefing at 8.15am, allowing competitors time to sail out to the lagoon for the race start at 8.45am. With very light winds a number of helms were grateful for a tow to the race area.

A triangular course was set to the east end of the lagoon and the first race saw Paul Goakes/Catherine Goodley take line honours, followed by Dave Cooper/Jane Heath in 2nd and George Finch/Rosa Finch in 3rd.

The second race was a straightforward 'race to a finish line' which was set back towards the quay to get the fleet home before the water and wind completely disappeared. Dave/Jane were the race winners and made it back just as the tide turned. They were followed home by George and Stephanie in 2nd place. The rest of the fleet struggled to get round the corner with a dying breeze and a turned tide but Vince and Fiona Phillips managed to cross the line to claim 3rd place.

It was lovely to have Linda Roy attend to present the trophy, which is in honour of her late husband, to Dave and Jane.
