Abersoch Mirror Week 2026 Day 2
by An Extremely Enthusiastic Spectator 18 Aug 17:34 BST
17-21 August 2026
The Committee Boat proudly took its position at 09:30, ready for an 11:00 start — a model of punctuality, professionalism, and optimism. The windward mark was plonked down in a neat little 8-knot westerly, and everything looked set for a textbook day of racing.
Naturally, the Mirrors took one look at this well-organised setup and said: "Nah. We're starting now."
Cue FOUR general recalls, even with the mighty U Flag flapping sternly in the breeze. At this point the race team had consumed enough stress to power a small generator.
Wind Shifts, Tide Shenanigans and Committee Boat Ballet
Just as the tide thought about going slack, the wind decided to audition for Strictly Come Dancing, throwing in two major shifts that forced the race team into a series of course resets, boat pirouettes, and quiet muttering.
Finally, at 12:30, Race 3 began.
Two cracking laps were sailed, with several junior sailors completing a heroic three-hour endurance test that should probably earn them a Duke of Edinburgh award.
Race 2 followed on the second attempt (because of course it did), and despite yet another monumental wind shift, the race team launched it beautifully in a building breeze. Gold stars all round.
Everyone was back ashore by 15:00, tired, salty, and spiritually fulfilled.
Beach Games: Where Chaos Meets Tradition
At 16:30, the Beach Games kicked off — and shockingly, a huge number of competitors turned up for the classic events:
- Tug of War - featuring questionable tactics and enthusiastic shouting
- Hurling the Welly - because nothing says "Mirror Week" like throwing footwear
Photos & Results
Pete Hawkins has taken photos so good they should probably be in the Tate Modern. Go admire them — they capture the day perfectly. Thanks Pete!
Results after Day 2: (top three, 4 races, no discard)
1st - Pocket Rocket: Paul, Evangeline & Adrian Hayden
2nd - Lightning McQueen: Matt McGovern with Albie & Bodhi
3rd - Whistler: Neil, Fionn & Rory Baker
A lovely spread of clubs too — Lymington, South Staffs, and Derwent Water — proving once again that Mirrors have more nationwide appeal than most TV shows.
So let's get ready for another day of mayhem and fun tomorrow with the forecast of a little more wind that we hope will not be such a mix of directions...
Cheers
The very enthusiastic spectator.
