Round 9 of the 12 event TT series saw a good turnout of 24 boats at this hotspot of RC Laser racing, with many of the fleet having travelled over to Gosport from the previous days event at Eastbourne. The wind put up a good show, blowing around 12-15mph straight down the lake, enabling race officer Alec Powell to set a good long beat.

No surprises who won the two seeding races; John Tushingham and John Arundell yet again! Chris Treagust was second in heat B, whilst John Trimmer surprised even himself with an excellent second place in heat A. Race 1, and Tushingham took an early lead but couldn't hold back an on-form Arundell with Gosport's David Edwards never far behind in third.

First was a position that Arundell was making his own this weekend, once again he dominated with six wins from the eight fleet races, meanwhile Tushingham was suffering a midday slump, as was David Edwards - could it had something to do with David's over-generous hospitality the previous evening! Chris Treagust stepped up to the challenge and put in a good string of second places and with two races remaining looked set to split the Johns in the overall standings. Other notable performances came from Gosport's Darren Marston who sailed brilliantly to temporarily halt John Arundell's winning spree in race 5 and backed this up with consistently good finishes to take fifth overall, good going for his first TT event. Brian Askell showed great pace in finishing fourth overall, but special mention must go to Liz Tushingham who gave the leading bunch something to think about, two third places and no result to count outside the top ten gave her a well deserved sixth overall, even beating hubby John in race 7!

Tushingham managed to gets things back on track with a first and second in the last two races to narrowly fend off Chris Treagust for second overall - but it was close! Many interested spectators were making serious enquiries about joining the racing at Gosport, their winter series is looking like being even bigger than last year, when over twenty boats were known to turn out. Details of RC laser activity at Gosport can be found at www.rclasergosport.org.uk. The series is looking like a certainty for John Arundell with three events to go - but it's not over yet!

With a race within a race for the Johnson family The wind was blowing from the clubhouse direction for the ten RC Laser entries. It looked to be a stock 'B' rig all-dayer, but with the light patch at the entry point, a bit of extra sail cloth helps you get through the lulls. Posted on 6 Oct 2024
