Industry Associations often come under flak from their members who imagine that it's all beer and skittles at the association's HQ and that they deserve far more than their annual subscriptions contribute.

Having served on the Sailing Industry Association committee for over 12 years at the former BIA of NSW, I know just how hard the association staff work. Howard Glenn, who recently resigned as CEO of the amalgamated Boating Industry Association, comprising of the state associations of NSW, SA and Qld, was one of those hard workers. Having completed his role, ensuring the unification of the three associations transitioned smoothly, Howard is moving on. We wish him all success for the future.

John Curnow writes an interesting article regarding the success of J-Boats, the US builder, and how the Australian importer, Yacht Spot, sold five J/111s into the Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne where they all compete against each other. John was fortunate enough to get to speak at length with three of the Melbourne armada and get a complete picture of why their J/111s are held in such high regard.

The closing date for the 2018 Australian Marine Industry Awards applications is a mere two weeks away. The Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) reminds those who are entering to submit their applications before the deadline of the 23rd March 2018 5:00pm AEST. The prestigious Australian Marine Industry Awards will be announced at the Gala Dinner on the evening of Tuesday 22nd May at the InterContinental Resort in Sanctuary Cove, Queensland. The awards dinner is the industry night of nights for the Australian marine export, superyacht and commercial sectors and is a great opportunity for industry to meet, greet and support the efforts and contributions of their fellow industry peers.

If you are superyacht captain, Superyacht Australia is calling for Captains to apply for the new Australian Voyage Award. This an opportunity for Captains to be recognised for their inspirational cruises within Australian waters. Sponsored by Captain Carl Brandes from MY Glaze and his wife Melanie Brandes, the award is expected to be recognised on the global stage.

Also looking for entries is the annual 2018 Tahiti Pearl Regatta. Registrations are filling fast for this sailing rally, which is sponsored by Multihull Solutions. It is staged from 7-12 May and held on the stunning waterways of French Polynesia. Launched in 2004, the Tahiti Pearl Regatta attracts large contingents of crews from around the region and across the world each year.

Other news in this week's e-newsletter from Flagstaff Marine and their new power boat dealership, the Jeanneau 440 debuting at Sail Port Stephens, Fusion cutting prices on its award winning products, a new software upgrade from Lowrance for its C-Map charting and much more.
