Zhik UK 29er National Championship at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 1

by Paul Hammett 8 Aug 2016 07:54 BST 6-12 August 2016

The first day of the Zhik 29er Nationals got off to a cracking start with champagne sailing at Royal Torbay Yacht Club. A shifty South Westerly blowing 10-16 knots greeted the 76 boats for the first two races of the qualifying series.

Hannah Bristow and Emily Covell lead the Championships after day 1 with a near perfect score of 1,2 and leading the day in the Blue flight. Yellow flight was dominated by Nick Robins and Billy Venis-Ozane with a 1,3 to take 2nd overall. Worlds bronze medalist Crispin Beaumont and Tom Darling lie 3rd after 5,3 in Blue and George Tardrew / Freddie Simes hold 4th after a 2,7. Consistency was hard to find in the competitive fleets with the shifty conditions. Other race winners included Patrick Croghan and Dom Lewis who took race 1 yellow and Freya Black / Elliott Wells who won race 1 Blue.

Qualifying continues tomorrow with 4 races scheduled and a forecast of 10-15 knots from the NW. With another 18 races scheduled its early days with plenty of position changes likely before the split to Gold and Silver.
