XOD Series at Royal Lymington Yacht Club - Week 3

by Fenella Lees 17 May 2011 08:25 BST 11 & 14 May 2011

Saturday Series Day 3 (14 May)

A NW moderate wind coming down the Lymington River and a start at low water made for a tricky inshore running start for the fleet of 18 XODs who came to the line which was set to the NE of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club platform for their third Saturday race. Stuart Jardine in X119, Lone Star made a premature start at the pin end and failed to return thus sacrificing his points near the top of the table. With their colourful spinnakers set the fleet crossed to the Island shore to round Wadsworths buoy, Ian Beer in X33, Claire de Lune, squeezed first round just ahead of William Norris, X178, Beatrix. On the beat back across the Solent to Pylewell, X178 and Ado Jardine, X140, Lucrezia stood to the favourable east side of the course overhauling X33 on the west side. X178 and X140 extended their lead on the next spinnaker leg back across to Solent Bank and kept their positions as they beat back to Tanners and then reached westwards to the platform finish. Meanwhile Rory Paton in X164, Diana had worked his way to third place, closely followed by David da Cuhna X161.

Saturday Series Day 3 Results: (top six)

1st Beatrix, William Norris
2nd Lucrezia, Ado Jardine

Wednesday Series Day 2 (11 May)

The second XOD points race saw 15 boats on the start line in a steady SW breeze. The first mark was a testing beat to Hurst buoy against the tide so a lot of short tacking trying to remember the position of the banks and finding out how much they had moved since last summer - several boats touched the mud but Xoanan's crew had an unplanned swim to push her off. There was then a good spinnaker run to Black Rock then Pylewell, which was followed by 2 winward/leeward legs with a finish at the RLYC Club Line.

Wednesday Series Day 2 Results: (top six)

1st Lonestar, Stuart Jardine
2nd Lucrezia, Ado Jardine
3rd Diana, Rory Paton
4th Mayday, David da Cuhna
5th Mersa, Karl Thorne
6th Beatrix, Bill Dunsdon
