Poole Millenium Keelboat Regatta Overall

by David Harding 30 May 2000 09:12 BST

After the weekend’s gales, lighter breezes enticed bigger fleets out into Poole Bay on the final day. Most of the leading contenders were still to be seen at the sharp end of their respective fleets despite the change in conditions, most noticably Harry Evans (‘Alvine XII’) whose third successive bullet not only brought him victory in Class 1, but earned him the title of overall regatta winner.

Not to be out-done, his son Alistair made sure of his position at the top of the 22-strong J24 fleet with a 3rd and a 2nd (the Js sailed two races having only managed one on Sunday). Evans was burried in the middle of the fleet at the windward mark in race 5, but pulled through to 2nd at the leeward mark by sailing a straight line while the rest of the fleet went high and had to gybe. Duncan Peace in ‘Wijit’ was the day’s top performer with a 2nd and 1st, but a disqualification in race 3 dropped him down to 6th overall.

In IRC 2, Matt Moseley in ‘Uproar’ had already secured top slot and took the day off. The race was won by ‘Kudos’ (Ian Foster) by over 7 minutes on corrected time from the overall runner-up, Malcolm Smith in ‘Songline’.

Hubert Lea’s fifth first in ‘Leaway’ was more than enough to put him at the head of the table in PHHS 1, with another GK 24, ‘Minx’ (Chris Hawkes) taking 2nd on the day and overall. Andrew Richards was equally dominant in PHHS 2, sailing his Sadler 25 ‘Shorty’ into an unbroken string of firsts ahead of Frank Hackforth in ‘Thumper’.

In the harbour, Michael Flanders finished 2nd to Richard Thomas in the XOD’s final race but won the class by a comfortable margin, while John Pattison continued his unbeaten run in the Flying Fifteens.
