Poole Millenium Keelboat Regatta - Day Two

by David Harding 28 May 2000 09:14 BST

Strong south-westerlies and the forecast of more wind to come led to all the competing classes starting from one start line in the harbour. Racing was cancelled for the smaller boats.

Gusts of well over 30 knots combined with steep seas saw some spectacular downwind sailing, one J24 competitor describing the first run of race 2 as ‘the most exciting white-knuckle ride I’ve ever had’. Most of the Js could be seen giving their keels an airing at some stage, but survived with no serious damage. In the bigger classes, Harry Evans on ‘Alvine XII’ tore his mainsail and had to finish under headsail only, but still made 3rd place.
