Putting Poole back on the racing map
Poole has been overlooked as a major yacht racing venue for too long, believe many of the harbour’s leading sailors, which is why Parkstone, Poole and the Royal Motor yacht clubs have got together to organise the Millennium Keelboat Regatta over the Bank Holiday weekend of 26th - 29th May.
Sponsored by Wadworth, the event will incorporate the X 332 National Championships and the J24 Spring Cup, as well as providing starts for IRC cruisers and boats rated under the Poole Harbour Handicap System. Many of the Solent’s leading sailors have announced their intention to compete, and the total number of boats is expected to exceed 200. Apart from the Js and 332s, one-design classes already confirmed include Flying Fifteens and XODs.
Six races are to be sailed over the four days, with the boats being accommodated in the clubs’ marinas. The organisers have arranged water taxis between clubs so that competitors can leave their cars at home, while children’s entertainment will be provided during the day. A full social programme and comprehensive prize fund have also been promised.
