Poole Millenium Keelboat Regatta - Day Three

Heavy-weather fans continued to revel in westerly winds which hit gale-force during the frequent squalls.
In IRC 1, Harry Evans’ Swan 44 ‘Alvine XII’ recorded two straight firsts, but a pair of thirds kept Ian Hayes (‘Eye Eye’) in the lead overall from Andrew Pearce in ‘Magnum’. Event organiser Martin Pearson missed race 4 through prop trouble with his Dehler 33, ‘Ruthless’, but was back afloat in time to notch up a 2nd in race 5.
IRC 2 saw Matt Moseley in ‘Uproar’ still heading the fleet in race 4 ahead of Gillian Hawley’s ‘Supanova’, but the positions were reversed in race 5. ‘Matchmaker’ (Mike Fox) also put on a spurt with two 3rd places. Three boats are now tied in 3rd place on 25 points.
The J24s only sailed one race, delaying their start to give the wind time to ease. In the event, they raced during the breeziest part of the day and only sailed one round of a short windward/leeward course. Alistair Evans soon took the lead, followed by Duncan Peace in ‘Wijit’. David Ellis’s 7th place dropped him to 2nd overall behind Evans.
PHHS 1 saw a battle of the GK 24s, with ‘Leaway’ and ‘Minx’ locked together for much of the way but the former coming out ahead on corrected time. In PHHS 2 it was the two Sadler 25s who led the fleet, Andrew Richards’ ‘Shorty’ getting the better of Frank Hackforth and Tony Chadwick in ‘Thumper’ both times.
In the harbour, only two Flying Fifteens braved the conditions along with around half the XODs.
