Phantom Open Meeting at Bewl Valley Sailing Club

by Roger Brown 25 Mar 2002 21:01 GMT

Two days of glorious blue skies but sadly litle wind greeted but locals and visitors at Bewl Valley for the Phantom Open Meeting sailed over the weekend of 23/24 March.

Several new boats were on their first or second outings and Richard Pakes in 1106 was one of these who took an early lead in the first race. He could not however keep Allen Burrell at bay and at the finish it was Burrell from Pakes with fellow Haversham member Brian Glen in third with last year's winner Phil Argent fourth.

The second race was sailed back to back but the breeze was barely a forc 1 with ocaisional gusts to 2. Nick Beloefrom Northampton SC began to stamp his authority on the event by winning with Paul Earnshaw from Netley in second place. Glen was again third with Neil Fulcher from Stone SC, in another brand new boat, fourth.

Sunday started out with a reasonable breeze with was far from steady and gradually died so that the start had to be postponed. It was eventually started and local helm Roger Brown lead to the windward mark but was caught by a windshift which left him moored to the mark and allowed half the fleet to sail past. Beloe found all the right shifts to win from Tyler Harmsworth from Stone SC and the ever consistent Glen again third. Burrwell was fourth, Husk Fifth and Argent sixth.

The final race after lunch started in very light airs and with a depleted fleet. The breze did finally re-appear and filled to a force 2 which allowed Burrell his first win of the meeting. Beloe was second, Husk third and Glen fourth.

So overall, NIck Beloe won from Allen Burrell and Brian Glen. Bob Barris took the prize for first Bewl boat. The race officer on Sunday, Martin Brooking deserved a prize for his patience and setting good courses in trying conditions. Phil Barnard did an excellent job on Saturday but had conditions somewhat easier.
