Swordfish Open Meeting at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club

by Peter Limebear 31 Jul 2001 10:54 BST

Swordfish at Abersoch Dinghy Week

The first three days gave the Swordfish fleet some very close racing. The gauntlet was thrown down on day one by Hamish and Rachel Gledhill who fought hard to defend the family honour against the ever present Alan & James Padgett and Phil & Jacqui Thompson. These three boats led the fleet through the course which included a superb spinnaker reach to NWG. However it was the long beat to Vimto that undid the Padgett's hold on this first race. Using the tidal flow to his advantage, Hamish came home in first position leaving the others protecting their position from Peter and Katie Limebear followed closely by Mike Wallace and Claire Green.

Day two saw the Gledhill's opening up as strong lead closely followed by the Limebear's, Thompson's and Padgett's. Phil & Jacqui Thompson threw everything they could into regaining second place but the order remained the same.

The racing opened up on Tuesday when Hamish's over enthusiastic start earned him a black flag. The Thompson's finished first with Bill Gardner and Phil Allen taking second place, Ken Harrison and Mark Sebine held third from the chasing fleet. Malcolm McDonald achieved a superb 7th in some very strong and challenging wind

Wednesday onwards produced some very tame racing but kept the fleet together. Ted Farrance took a good 4th on Thursday with his new crew, Louise Green, who always seemed to be one place ahead of Roy and Andrew Green.. Jim & Hollie Birchall also scored a 7th finish on Thursday dropping back from 4th on the final beat home.
