Yachtmail Optimist Open Meeting @ Royal Lymington Yacht Club

by Editor 13 Jun 2001 22:57 BST

Main Fleet:

The 2001 Yacht mail sponsored Royal Lymington YC Optimist Class Open meeting (16th & 17th June) was eagerly awaited by many competitors following a disappointingly windless Inland Championships a few weeks earlier. 103 Main fleet entries came from across the South Coast, Thames Valley and Wales – making it the largest UK event outside the 3 main ranking events. Included in the entries were several members of the 2001 World and European Teams, and National squad members, as well as some attending their first Open meeting. To add an international flavour there was one entry from Bermuda and one from Malta. The recipe was set for close racing in the 6 race series.

Main Fleet Racing took place in the Solent slightly to the East of the Lymington River mouth sailing two lap trapezoidal courses. A South Westerly Wind (10kts) and East going spring tide gave some tidal choices in race one and two before the tide turned for the second two races on Saturday.

First blood went to Hannah Mills (Margham) who threw down the gauntlet in Race one with David Evans (British Steel) 2nd and Tom Mallindine (British Steel) 3rd. Hannah followed this in race 2 with a 104th by falling out of her boat!

A points battle developed between Evans, Philip White (Papercourt), Malindine, Tom Smedley (HISC), Chris Carden (RlymYC), Richard Mason (RlymYC), Ben Ainsworth (Bewl Valley) and James Doughty (Papercourt).

The changing tide made the starting ‘eager’ during Saturday afternoon, and the Race Officer resorted to the Black Flag as ‘dis-incentive’ to premature starting. Close sailing and long runs against the tide brought about some traffic jams at marks 3 & 4 after the tide turned to ebb.

Four Races were held on Saturday. A long day afloat and freshening breeze in the afternoon made for tired faces at the Barbeque in the evening.

Sunday was another sunny day with a Northerly wind, and starting across the tide presented another challenge to those visiting from inland waters. Once away though, the racing was close, with all 104 boats finishing in about 10 minutes after an hour’s sailing in each race.

Final victory went to David Evans from Philip White and Tom Smedley. First Lymington Boat was Chris Carden, first girl Hannah Mills.

The courses were excellently laid to accommodate the tide/ wind combination and produce fair racing.

Comprehensive Safety provision and support helped to make this a relaxed event. (See how relaxed it is moving 134 Optimists up and down the Lymington River on a busy day in June!).

Regatta Fleet:

Thirty-eight children entered the Regatta fleet and for many, this was the first time on the sea in conditions that were at times very testing. Saturday was designated a training day with Chris Mason giving excellent coaching and instruction on the shore before being joined by Johnny Marshall on the water who equally gave first class advice and lots of encouragement to all the children.

After a number of practice starts, where the children were encouraged to think about their positioning on the start line, a number of races were held. This gave the coaches an opportunity to pinpoint areas of weakness and coach the children around the course to improve their racing skills.

On Sunday, in conditions which at times were gusting a Force 5, a number of children ventured into the Solent to take part in five excellent races with Stuart Jardine as race officer. Stuart did an excellent job in efficiently fitting in so many races and it was evident that as each race progressed all the children's racing skills were improving, as they became more confident and familiar with the course. After five races, Daniel Gibbons had an outstanding set of scores coming first in all races, with Patrick Liddicoat, Hermione Stanley, Thomas Allen and Paul Minors achieving good consistent scores throughout all five races.

Hats off to all the children who took part this weekend for all their endeavours, big and small, and lots of hard work.

Thanks of course to our fantastic sponsor, “Yachtmail of Lymington”, who for the second year running, provided a very generous array of prizes and goodies for all. There were I’m sure, many happy but tired children and parents travelling home on Sunday evening.
