ILCA 4 UK Open and National Championships 2026 at Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy

The 2026 ILCA National Championships took place at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) from 22-29 July, with over 240 sailors competing across the ILCA 4, 6 and 7 fleets. Most competitors came from around the UK, but there were also sailors from overseas, including Australia and New Zealand, making for a really competitive week.

The event got off to a great start with all three fleets racing in Weymouth Bay. The day began with light winds, but a sea breeze gradually filled in during the afternoon, giving everyone some good racing. The breeze slowly shifted to the right as the day went on, and after some close racing, there were wins for Jasper Jenkinson and Fraser Hakes, with Toby Turner leading the ILCA 4 fleet at the end of the day.

On day two, the ILCA 4s and 7s raced in Portland Harbour while the ILCA 6s headed back out into the bay. It was another light-wind day were getting off the start line cleanly and finding a clear lane made all the difference. Three races were completed, with Jasper Jenkinson taking another race win in Race 4. Harry Brown had an excellent day, scoring a 7th, 2nd and 1st to move into the overall lead.

Saturday (day 3) brought a completely different challenge as the wind really picked up. The ILCA 4 fleet launched early to try and squeeze in two races before it got even windier. The shifty conditions meant the committee boat end of the line paid off, with Finlay Rhodes winning Race 5 ahead of Sam Mason and Felix Harle. Fraser Hakes then won Race 6, followed by Pippa Knights in second and Meri Greenway in third.

Sunday (day 4) was one of the windiest days of the week and produced some brilliant racing in the sunshine inside Portland Harbour. Thomas Knight was on top form, taking two race wins after some close battles with Australia's Sebastian Behrens and Sam Mason.

Monday's (day 5) breeze eased slightly but still made for some amazing sailing. The conditions stayed shifty, keeping everyone on their toes, with race wins going to Toby Turner, with Callum Marshall in 2nd, Megan Gowers finishing 3rd, and Thomas Knight taking another bullet, with Fraser Hakes and Sebastian Behrens close behind.

The final day wasn't quite what everyone had hoped for, with very little wind arriving. After a postponement ashore, all three fleets launched hoping the sea breeze would fill in. Unfortunately, the ILCA 6 gold fleet couldn't get another race completed, but the ILCA 4s managed one final shortened-course race in very light conditions. Monte Morse took the win, with Callum Marshall second and Amelie Ballantyne taking an impressive third.

Congratulations to Fraser Hakes, who became the 2026 ILCA 4 National Champion after putting together an incredibly consistent series across all conditions over the week. Sam Mason finished second overall, with Callum Marshall taking third.

Pippa Knights was the first female sailor, finishing sixth overall. Ebony Aloof was second female, while New Zealand's Sophia Turner finished as third female.

A massive thank you goes to the race committee for doing such a great job all week and managing to complete 13 races despite the mixed conditions. Thanks also to everyone at WPNSA for putting on another fantastic championship. A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers who helped make the week run so smoothly both on and off the water, which enabled us all to have such a great week sailing.

The sailing wasn't the only highlight of the week either, as we all had a lot of fun off the water with the Quiz night and the casino being two of the highlights.

Overall, it was an awesome week of sailing with everything from drifting sea breezes to full-on windy harbour racing, and another brilliant ILCA Nationals at WPNSA.
