Consistency brings the biggest reward
After yesterday's lay day, the wind decided to set some different tests for the 90 boats contesting the 505 World Championships at Hayling Island Sailing Club. Again the sun was shining and the temperature even higher, but the breeze was now coming from the southeast. The Race Committee decided that Bracklesham Bay was the best area to make the most of the forecast conditions.
The wind had been oscillating between 120 and 140 degrees and this caused a short delay in the countdown to Race 7 of the 10 race series, but after resetting the windward mark the fleet was got under way by local sailors Robert Gullan and Paul Childs in GBR 9232 in about 8 knots of breeze. First out of the gate was GBR 9274, sailed by former Olympic sailor and coach Paul Brotherton and James Fawcett. This early ploy enabled them to play the shifts and coupled with good boat speed in the conditions got them to the windward mark first, just ahead of Harvey Hillary and Archie Massey in GBR 9093 and the French duo of Hervé de Kergariou and Valentin Dechauffour. However, with bigger implications that would become clear by the end of the day, the German pair of Jan-Philipp Hofmann and Felix Brockerhoff were not far behind in fourth place.
In the 505 a wind speed of around 9 knots is at the margin between it being better to sail the downwind leg by running as square as possible and when it is better to sail higher and faster but further. The breeze continued to be capricious not only in direction but in speed across the course, with readings varying between 8 and 10 knots at any given time. Notwithstanding these challenges, Brotherton/Fawcett managed to hold on to the lead throughout. By the finish gun, two of the most consistent performers in the series, Hofmann/Brockerhoff and Howie Hamlin and Andy Zinn took second and third places.
The wind had been showing signs of clocking to the right as forecast. The course was reset to reflect the recent average speed and direction. The Pathfinder was USA 9179, sailed by Pierre Jeangirard and Paul VonGrey. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the success the tactic had given them in the previous race, Brotherton/Fawcett were first out once again. However, they were not the only boat to benefit from getting out of the gate early, and by the end of the first beat Hofmann/Brockerhoff led round the first mark, ahead of two French boats, de Kergariou / Dechauffour and Philippe Boite and Thimothée Chiron.
During the downwind leg the wind increased and backed which brought about many further place changes in the fleet as a whole but rising above all this were Hofmann/Brockerhoff who had increased their lead by the time they had reached the leeward gate. To reflect the wind changes the next beat was lengthened and the direction adjusted but this did not phase the German pair at all, who held their lead right to the end of the race. There was a close contest at the finish for second place between Brotherton/Fawcett and AUS 8801, Peter Nicholas Luke Payne, with the British boat just prevailing.
Jan-Philipp Hofmann and Felix Brockerhoff's victory in this race means that they cannot be overtaken in the overall championship so will be the winners of the 2026 505 World Championship, sponsored by WIP, Ovington Boats and Allen, with two races still to go. Having previously won multiple German National Championships and been runners up in the last two European Championships and the 2024 World Championship they have finally become World Champions with an impressively consistent performance across a variety of conditions.
