The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind

Good sailors have to understand wind patterns and shifts but sometimes the essential source of their boat's power is so capricious that it can foil the best of them.

It was with eager anticipation that the fleet of 90 boats headed out into Hayling Bay for the first day of the 2026 505 World Championship, sponsored by WIP, Ovington Boats and Allen, in bright sunshine.

As forecast, by the start of the first race at 1pm the breeze had settled down to a brisk 13 knots from the SSW providing brilliant sailing conditions. Towards the end of the first beat 2024 World Champions, Peter Nicholas and Luke Payne had got their noses to the front, just ahead of the local team of Robert Gullan and Paul Childs and the current Australian National Champions, Malcolm Higgins and Nicholas Johnston. The wind slightly increased during the race with only minor oscillations in direction. Nicholas and Payne held onto their position throughout but by the end of the race Higgins and Johnston had made it up to second, followed by another former championship winning team of Mike Holt and Carl Smit.

Since the wind had backed a just a few degrees south and was staying between 12 and 15 knots, the Race Officer wasted no time in setting up and starting the second race. After the 1.6 nautical mile first upwind leg, another Australian boat driven by Mike Quirk and the UK's Tim Needham just rounded ahead of Ian Pinnell and Robert Woelfel, and the German pairing of Jan-Philipp Hofmann and Felix Brockerhoff. This order remained the same for the downwind and most of the next upwind legs. However, the wind then decided to get bored with doing the same thing for so long. It had already softened to 9 knots, but as the leaders set off down the final downwind leg to the finish it first veered to the left by 30 degrees and then dropped further. However, after a few minutes it swung back again to almost its original direction and strength. The first shift had tempted most of the leading group to gybe onto port tack at the top of the run, but the second shift greatly favoured the boats further down in the pack and allowed them to close right up on, and in some cases pass the leaders.

Among the first to spot the wind restoring normal service was the UK pair of Paul Brotherton and James Fawcett who gybed back across to meet the new wind, enabling them to pull up from an eighth place rounding at the previous mark to take the gun at the finish. Hoffman / Brockerhoff and Quirke / Needham just managed to make the most of their earlier positions to finish second and third respectively.
