The next generation of sailing talent will take to the water this weekend as the NSW Optimist Interclub 2026 kicks off at Woollahra Sailing Club on Sunday, 3 May.

Now in its third year, the volunteer-run regatta continues to grow in popularity, bringing together 100+ junior sailorsfrom clubs across New South Wales. The Interclub remains proudly free to enter, reinforcing its mission to make competitive sailing accessible to young athletes of all backgrounds.

Competitors aged between 8 and 15 will race in the Optimist class—an internationally recognised entry-level dinghy that has launched the careers of many elite sailors.

Over the course of the regatta, participants will compete in a series of short-course races designed to test boat handling, tactical decision-making, and sportsmanship. The event emphasises both competitive excellence and the development of foundational sailing skills in a supportive and engaging environment.

Event organisers are expecting strong fleet numbers and a high standard of racing, with favourable autumn conditions forecast for Sydney Harbour. Spectators can look forward to exciting on-water action and a vibrant atmosphere at Woollahra Sailing Club throughout the day.

"The Interclub is all about participation, learning, and building connections between young sailors," said an event spokesperson. "Keeping the event volunteer-run and free to enter is central to what makes it so special."

The NSW Optimist Interclub also serves as an important stepping stone for sailors aspiring to state and national competition, offering valuable race experience early in their sailing journeys.

The 2026 Interclub series will continue with upcoming events hosted by Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and Hunter Hill Sailing Club—highlighting the generosity of all three host clubs in delivering the series free of charge and supporting grassroots sailing across the state.

In addition to the efforts of dedicated volunteers, the event is supported by generous sponsors including Ronstan, Boatcrewgear.com, North Sails, White Bay Marine Park, Vaikobi, NB Sailsports, and Rooster Australia, who have contributed a range of gifts and prizes for competitors throughout the series. Racing is scheduled to begin from late morning on Sunday, with a briefing for competitors held prior. Family members, supporters, and the local community are encouraged to attend and cheer on the sailors.
