The 48th edition of the Spi Ouest-France Banque Populaire Grand Ouest regatta concluded under sunny skies this Monday in Quiberon Bay, with easterly winds of 14 to 17 knots, making the sailing conditions particularly challenging.
Two additional races were held for the Open 7.50 and Mach 6.5 classes, bringing the total to thirteen races for the regatta. The winners, who had dominated from the start, maintained their lead and secured a decisive victory.
Open 7.50: Banque Populaire, a well-deserved victory through consistent performance
Eleven crews competed in the Open 7.50 throughout this 48th edition, and Lois Berrehar and Banque Populaire brought home a well-deserved victory. Led by Basile Bourgnon, Quentin Ponroy, Paul Philibert, and Tugdual Guillemot, the crew finished the regatta with 20 net points—never falling outside the top 3 in any of the thirteen races. Their unwavering consistency, the hallmark of greatness, earned them a complete and decisive victory.
Just two points behind, Nicolas Groleau and BT Blue secured a strong second place. The crew, composed of Alan Pennaneac'h, Arthur Le Vaillant, Nicolas Cottais, and Felix Oberle, delivered a solid and consistent performance, proving particularly formidable in the final races on Monday with two consecutive wins that rewarded their perseverance. The third step of the podium went to Thomas Normand and his Altaïr. The boat, with Antoine Joubert, Louis Viat, Julien Villion, and Antoine Carraz on board, had a great regatta, notably thanks to two race wins and impressive consistency.
Fourth place went to All Purpose, confirming the talent of Frédéric Moreau and his crew (Guillaume Trotte, Jean-Baptiste Gellee, Matthieu Souben, François Morvan, and Frédéric Duthil). Exemplary in their consistency—never finishing lower than fifth in the first ten races—they delivered a clean and solid performance.
Fifth place went to Open Bar, skippered by Edouard Alikiagalelei and his teammates Renan Letourneur, Laurent Mermod, Lucas Domage, and Julien Bourgeois. They suffered from a difficult start that ultimately dashed their hopes of a podium finish. However, the rest of the program showed a crew capable of fighting back, with several well-executed fourth and fifth place finishes.
Jean-Baptiste Daramy and Screb - Insperial (Pierre-François Dargnies, Estelle Greck, Bleiz Larzul, Steven Liorzou, and Clément Bouyssou) sailed consistently and finished sixth.
Seventh place went to Le Trého, whose crew, led by Frédéric Le Peutrec, included Mathieu Groleau, Loick Laffont, Gildas Groleau, Antoine Danes, and Sacha Le Roch. Their regatta was hampered by a penalty in race 4, which proved costly, forcing them to complete the rest of the event with a difficult deficit to overcome.
Ossian represented the international Challenge Ocean team with Benjamin Owens, Pascal Allain, Luke Lawrence, Karl Haddock, Charles Yood, and Shelton Baenninger. They finished eighth, despite well-executed races hampered by a penalty and a disqualification midway through the regatta. Ninth place went to Cadet Springer, comprised of Christian Maby, François Lebourdais, Benoît Mercier, Tristan Douard, and Ronan Desert. Penalized at the start of the regatta, the crew nevertheless rallied well towards the end, notably securing encouraging fifth and eighth place finishes in the final races. Tenth place went to Flying Doctor, skippered by Hugo Lauras, Eleuthere Gay, Mathilde Fontan, Nicolas Sansonetti, and Mathilde Blancho.
Mach 6.5: Dimension Polyant Dominates, Alternative Sailing Holds Back
Eight crews competed in the Mach 6.5 class, and Mathieu Bourdais emerged victorious with Dimension Polyant. Supported by Ewen Leclech, Logan Vergy, and Théau Guilcher, the crew notched no fewer than five race wins out of thirteen, only finishing outside the top three twice. A truly impressive display of dominance. Just one point behind, Mathieu Jones and Alternative Sailing delivered a superb performance. The crew of Guillaume Colas, Johan Hellot, and Cédric Fleury finished a close second, having secured victory in two races, including the final one, a sign of their steadily improving performance throughout the week. A mere one-point deficit: the frustration was commensurate with the achievement.
Third place went to Yann Sassy and L'Ankou, completing a particularly tight podium. Hugo Feydit, Eric Dumont, and Nicolas Troussel sailed a very strong race, winning two races and maintaining consistency from start to finish. Only four points separated the top three: Quiberon Bay offered a peak level of competition in this series. Fourth place went to Dimension Polyant II, skippered by Jérôme Aubert, Hélène Aubert, Corentin Lerouge, and Jean-André Hebel. They experienced an up-and-down regatta but managed to bounce back with several strong performances.
