Switch UK Championship at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy - Day 1

by Simon Hiscocks 27 Sep 2025 06:51 BST 26-28 September 2025

Imagine stepping in to the DeLorean and arriving at the first ever National Championship of your class. Would those present be aware that they were in the throws of making history and how long in to the future will this journey take us? For answers please look into the crystal ball, for more information please read on...

As predicted Finn Dickinson has set the marker down with Sam Whaley just one point back, whilst Matt Beck put in a strong performance to claim third on the leaderboard.

With a slowly decreasing wind, it was a good test of sailors' ability to stick their tacks and stay on the foil. Keep the Switch on the foil and its light air performance is really quite remarkable.

In the Women's 7.5 fleet it was another favourite in Hattie Rogers who stamped her name on the results sheet, with a few notables in the Men's 8.5 fleet looking at her rudder. Elysia O Leary had a solid day, including taking a race win, so it might not all go Hattie's way.

James Crossley leads the youth fleet, holding on to 5th, but nothing is sure with the scoring format.

Each day of the regatta is scored as a single series with the overall result of each day carried forward to the final results, where the final day score is added to the best score of each sailor from either of the first two days. With ties being broken in favour of the last day it creates an effective final. Get a good result on day one and your place amongst the sailors still in with a chance is booked. Let your guard down on day two, and you gift the overall chances to more competitors.

Day two looms on Saturday with all to play for. There are for sure some names who would fancy their chances of a better result to take through to the final and some who will be trying there best to at least match today's results.

Stay tuned as this all unfolds. Plenty of reels from the racing at www.instagram.com/switchonedesignuk
