The countdown has begun for one of the most anticipated sailing events of the year: the 2025 ILCA Senior European Championships & Open European Trophy, taking place in Marstrand, Sweden, from August 9-16. With 288 elite sailors confirmed across all three classes, this championship promises world-class racing, Olympic-level excitement, and a stunning Scandinavian backdrop.

All Three Senior ILCA Classes Featured, with New Titles on the Line

As usual, the event will include all three Senior ILCA classes:

  • ILCA 7 (Men's Olympic Class) - 153 entries
  • ILCA 6 Women (Women's Olympic Class) - 93 entries
  • ILCA 6 Men - 42 entries

A significant innovation in 2025 is the introduction of the Under 23 title in both Olympic classes, with sailors now competing for both overall and U23 European honours. This provides a new platform for rising stars to shine alongside established champions.

Meanwhile, ILCA 6 Men retains its established format, awarding both an overall and an Under 21 titles.

ILCA 7: Olympic Greats and Rising Talents Collide

Leading the line-up is Pavlos Kontides CYP — the most decorated ILCA 7 sailor at the European Championships among this year's participants, with two Gold and three Bronze medals, placing him fourth on the all-time ILCA 7 Euros medal table. A two-time World Champion and double Olympic Silver medallist (London 2012 and Paris 2024), Kontides continues to set the standard at the highest level.

With four Senior European medals to his name — one gold and three silver — Michael Beckett GBR is also among the top names to watch in Marstrand.

Philipp Buhl GER and Jonatan Vadnai HUN complete the list of sailors in this year's fleet who have earned multiple medals at the Senior European Championships.

Adding to the depth of the fleet are two of the class's most in-form senior athletes: Valtteri Uusitalo FIN, the reigning 2024 ILCA Senior European Champion, and Willem Wiersema NED, the newly crowned 2025 ILCA Senior World Champion. Both sailors have firmly established themselves at the top level and will arrive in Marstrand as serious contenders for the overall title.

The introduction of the Under 23 title brings added visibility to the new generation of ILCA 7 sailors. Expected to make an impact in the U23 category are Erik Norlén SWE, Finley Dickinson GBR, Omer Vered ISR, Enrico Tanferna ITA, Athanasios Kyfidis GRE, and Theodor Middelthon NOR, along with several other promising competitors.

ILCA 6 Women: Champions Return and Youth Surge Ahead

Among the ILCA 6 Women participants, Agata Barwinska POL is the only sailor in the fleet holding multiple Senior European medals, with two gold and one bronze to her name.

The field will also feature Maria Erdi HUN, the reigning European champion, and Louise Cervera FRA, the current World champion, both looking to extend their recent success on the international stage.

Another top contender will be Emma Plasschaert BEL, a two-time World champion and consistent performer at the highest level.

In addition to these world-class and experienced sailors, the fleet includes a highly skilled and ambitious new generation of talent — many of whom are Youth World or European champions. These include Alexandra Lukoyanova BUL, Eve McMahon IRL, Signe Brinkert NED, Roos Wind NED, Lilly May Niezabitowska POL, Adriana Castro Nuñez ESP, and Anja Von Allmen SUI, along with several others.

ILCA 6 Men: A Development Fleet with Competitive Depth

While not an Olympic class, the ILCA 6 Men remains a key developmental category in the senior circuit. With 42 competitors entered, this fleet will once again award both an overall title and an Under 21 European title — a long-standing format that continues to highlight future international prospects.

The fleet features a mix of promising young athletes and seasoned campaigners. Among the rising talents are Josip Tafra CRO and Jiri Tomes CZE, both of whom have shown strong form in recent youth and senior competitions. At the other end of the spectrum is Carlos Martinez ESP, a multiple-time ILCA Master World and European medallist, bringing a wealth of experience and tactical precision to the fleet.

While this class may not carry Olympic status, the level of racing in Marstrand is expected to be highly competitive, offering a platform for future stars to prove themselves and for veterans to demonstrate lasting skill.

With such a stacked field, both the senior and youth titles will be hard-fought, promising thrilling battles on the water and a showcase of tactical brilliance and physical endurance.
