Marine artist Rick Youmans describes creating a large painting of a client's pride and joy: a long, sleek Warwick 72” launch which was depicted travelling up the Coromandel coast against a strong breeze and short chop.

During the process, I travelled with the client on a delivery trip back to Auckland from Tairua (on the east coast of picturesque Coromandel Peninsular). There was a moderate northeasterly breeze and a short chop most of the way up, and the boat loved it. It easily transitioned between the short, steep waves and was at good speed. This experience was valuable for getting to know more about the customer and the vessel.

Once in Auckland, I took photos of the boat alongside the pontoon in Westhaven Marina from various angles. I used these photos, along with others of the boat, primarily moored in a quiet bay, as a guide to redraw the boat and place it in the specific sea conditions requested by the client.

Recreating the atmosphere, boat characteristics and sea state was the challenge. It took numerous explored variations and compositions to come up with the final look that answered the brief.

I then drew up the final painting size while showing the client progress images, especially during the initial stages. I aimed to capture the essence of the feeling and location in a piece of art that will evoke memories for a lifetime. The client was thrilled with the final result.

Have you ever thought about owning a custom painting of your boat? Something that is meaningful to you and will bring you joy for a lifetime and beyond.

Commissioning a painting is straightforward. We'll discuss your ideas and requirements, including size, subject, and budget. Subsequently, I will propose sketches for your approval before proceeding to create the full-size painting.
