2022 Wagner Cup for Dragon class at Fraglia Vela Riva - Day 1

by Elena Giolai 7 Oct 2022 11:34 BST 6-8 October 2022

This year's edition of the Wagner Cup for the Dragoni class was exceptionally hosted by Fraglia Vela Riva, instead of Circolo Vela Torbole due to work being carried out on the jetty: however, the protagonist was always Garda Trentino, which brought light winds on this opening day.

Two races finished and no less than six different nations in the top 10 of the provisional ranking. Leading the way were the Austrians Skolaut-Lutz and Piso, the most regulars in the fleet: for them a fourth and a sixth allow them to be leaders for the moment.

The new Star World Champion Diego Negri, aboard Klaus Diederichs' GBR 819, after a victory gained after a great comeback in race 1, was betrayed in the second race by a wind shift, which cost him twelfth place; he is nevertheless second in the overall standings just 3 points behind the leaders.

Third were the Portuguese Zankel-Rosa and Pereira, second in the first race. The event will end on Saturday 8 October.
