Preparing Sagarmatha for the Golden Globe Race 2022

Work in progress on Sagarmatha © Guy Waites

Much to do, and the jobs list is long, but progress is being made in 0 Degree Centigrade working conditions. Guy updates us on progress getting yacht Sagarmatha ready for the Golden Globe Round the World race.

On the day of the update, Guy was working on the forward water storage compartment. One of four water storage areas, fresh water needs to last for the duration of the race and careful thought has to apply to the volume carried, and avoiding leaks or contamination. Here, the storage area will be filled up with recycled plastic drinks bottles from the local pub (which one?) and the area sealed by a watertight plywood sheet with a small access hatch.

The day is sky blue and the temperature inside Sagarmatha is 0 Deg Centigrade even with the help of a frost heater. Guy is steadily progressing through the yacht's jobs list, ordered by different areas of the vessel. There's a YouTube clip of work in progress at:

On race sponsorship progress, the run-up to Christmas is good. Two new sponsors, Salcombe Brewery represented by Mark Tiner, and the Scarborough Business Ambassadors, each offered £5,000, adding to an earlier £5,000 provided by US based BTS Software Solutions represented an earlier racing partner of Guy's, David Tohn. And Guy reports the GoFundMe campaign has produced £18,000, to the racing fund is over halfway to its target of £50,000.

What happens next? With work progressing steadily, Guy states, "It's 2022 now, and seven months from a preliminary race start. We have to be in Le Sables d'Olonne in France by August and there's a prologue race, hopefully from a British Port to get us there. And there's rule compliance inspections, safety and registration packs that we have to complete for the race organisers to complete our entry."

Guy further commented:

"It's going to be a fantastic race without a doubt, the biggest challenge, adventure and event of my life, and you can be part of it. So why not? There's no excuse not to really, you know you want to!"
