Crosby Sailing Club held round three of their Open Frostbite series on Sunday 22nd January. A bitterly cold breeze greeted competitors, blowing straight down the lake.
Even before the race had started Spud Ward returned to shore with a broken tiller extension, found a replacement and just made the start. The solos of Ian Middleton, Frank Chamberlain and Roy White, came to the front. As the race progressed Ian pulled out a substantial lead, and a battle for second place started in earnest. Ian finished three and a half minutes clear of the pack, with Richie Allen pulling through from Roy, and Frank.
By race 2 the wind had strengthened, the fleet had a beat the whole length of the lake to the first mark. Rounding the first mark, Ian was followed by Spud and Richie. The laser of Brian Johnston began to harass the solos off wind, and had past them by the bottom of the lake. For four laps the laser played cat and mouse with the solos, but the stronger winds and Brian’s lighter weight saw him drop back slightly. By the finish it was Ian from Brian on the water, followed by Richie and Spud.
