YANMAR Moth World Championships at Hayama, Japan - Day 3

by Editor 26 May 2016 11:41 BST 23-29 May 2016

Paul Goodison, 2008 Olympic Gold Medallist in the Laser class, has taken the lead in the YANMAR Moth World Championships at Hayama, Japan after a superb day including two race wins and a 3rd. Hot on his heals is Chris Rashley, just a point behind and equal on points without a discard. This battle of the Brits looks set to go down to the wire...

Australian Scott Babbage continues to knock in consistent results and a win in the final race of the day leaves him just 6 points behind Rashley, with a comfortable cushion over fellow Australian, the fourth placed Josh Mcknight.

Robert Greenhalgh will jump back up the standings once the second discard comes into play, but he's 'walking on egg shells' with a Retired and Did Not Compete in his scoreline.

Increasing waves and a steady breeze of 13-15 knots rewarded those with experience in big sea conditions. Too much for some, as gear failure and physical fatigue forced them off the race track.

Home nation hopeful, Kohei Kajimoto, was a casualty of equipment failure, with a broken foil forcing him to return to shore for a replacement and miss the opening race of the day. He returned to the race track to deliver two 13th places and end race day three in 8th overall.

Hiroki Goto (JPN) also had problems with his wand system. Goto has been busy organizing the Moth Worlds, leaving little time to work on his boat, and places 16th.

Shinji Hachiyama - participating in the championships supported by a special program to develop young sailors - capsized his boat just before the third race start and the tiller extension was accidentally broken. However, he managed to join the third race and completed it. "I'm enjoying racing whatever happens during the races. I can see every day my progress," said Hachiyama with joy.

Friday is a lay day, with lighter breeze expected for the weekend's racing.
