16-17 July 2016
The Royal Lymington Cup, once ranked among the top match racing trophies in the world and a Grade 1 event on the World Match Racing Tour, is to be taken down, dusted off and put back into competition – but not in its former format. In its heyday the Cup, presented by then Rear Commodore Eileen Caulcutt, brought the cream of international sailing to The Solent and put the Hampshire, England club firmly on the national and indeed international stage – and that is the role that present Rear Commodore Sailing, Royal Lymington Yacht Club (RLymYC), Stuart Duffin intends the iconic trophy will once again play.
The RLymYC will host a new competition for inter-club teams of two IRC-rated yachts on July 16/17 2016 with racing in Christchurch Bay. Says Duffin: "The Club is looking to attract amateur sailors from the UK, Channel Islands, Ireland and Northern France to compete for the kudos of their Club's name on the Royal Lymington Cup."
Crucially, it is the name of the winning Club that will be engraved on the trophy and not, as in previous years, the names of the winning skipper and crew. Two yachts within the rating band of 0.95 to 1.10 TCF may enter provided the nominated skippers are full members of the same club. Multiple entries from clubs will be encouraged. Yachts may be chartered. The racing will be classified as an ISAF Cat 4 event.
