Optimist Ora Cup Ora at Lake Garda - Overall

by Elena Giolai 12 Aug 2015 17:42 BST 9-10 August 2015

Ora Cup Ora characterized by the... Pelèr: afternoon thunderstorms in the three days of racing have brought a good wind from the north, and not the Ora, the wind from the south which gives its name to the event organized twenty years ago from Circolo Vela Arco.

The Ora Cup Ora this year should have been called differently, since the race series were all made with the north wind of the morning! The storms that have raged all afternoon on the surroundings of Garda Trentino have regularly blocked the arrival of the heat from the south "Ora," and so the Race Committee were forced to give the starts for both morning at 8. Choice that certainly was worth it: the juniors have completed six races, while the cadets did a bit less, because initially the north wind was too strong for them and later in the morning it felt sharply, leaving the slower part of the fleet back out of time.

At the end the twentieth edition of the Ora Cup Ora went very well: the participants exceeded 250 helmsmen and the international presence was important with 11 nations. The technical level was certainly medium-high considered the participation of some helmsmen in the National team, including the winners of the juniors male and female, respectively Ilan Muccino and Giorgia Cingolani. The trophy was awarded to the team of Circolo Velico Ravennate, definitely grown in the past months and omnipresent in the regattas throughout Italy.

Junior fleet, 6 races

Among the juniors ranking, with the second day of racing it has undergone quite a change at the top: Ilan Muccino (CV Ravennate) is accumulating experience and victories. In Arco, after the first day he was fourth, regained precious points until he was imposed on the more than 140 competitors. Nice regain and surprise of the event was Tommaso Cilli (YC Sanremo), second for a single point and in before the other Italian Tommaso Salvetta (Fraglia Vela Riva), third for a not great second day (11th/4th/18th against 2nd- 1st-2nd in the first day of competitions). Fourth the Hungarian De Jonghe, started very well with three 1st and then decreased with 16-32 and 2, insufficient to reach the podium.

An overtaking at the end even among the girls, with Giorgia Cingolani (Fraglia Vela Riva) first before the German Theresa Steinlein, and ninth overall. Third the other sailor from the Fraglia Vela Riva Chiara Benini Floriani, thirteenth overall.

Cadet fleet, 4 races

No changes at the top list compared to the previous day between the cadets: the Slovenian Daniel Cante maintained the position reached in the first day and with two thirds and two first he won in front of Marco Gradoni (CN Fanese). Third, just for one point, Richard Schultheis for Malta. Among the girls another success for the talented Beatrice Sposato (CV Crotone) definitely on the way of his brother Demetrio, in these days he is training in Poland to get prepared for the Optimist Worlds at the end of the month. Beatrice, eleventh overall, won in front of the local Emma Mattivi (Fraglia Vela Riva) and Gaia Bolzonella (CV Torbole), protagonist of a good third place in race 3.
