Artemis Sonata Nationals at Helensburgh Sailing Club - Overall

by Mike Heath 28 Jul 2015 17:50 BST 25-28 July 2015

The forecast for day 4 of the Artemis Sonata National Championships at Helensburgh (28 July), never looked good. Sadly, the forecast was right, with light rain and almost no wind. The decision was taken mid-morning to abandon racing for the day so the overall results from Monday evening stood as the final overall. Whilst the crews packed up the prize giving was prepared for 15:30, where the run-away winner Steve Goacher and his crew from Royal Windermere YC in 'Eric the Boat' were awarded the Championship trophy. 2nd place went to Joe Cross from Poole YC with a great performance in 'Exposition'. Third place and the top local boat was Murray Caldwell from Cove SC in 'Red Hot Poker'. Another local boat, Ross McNish from Royal Gourock YC in 'Old School' finished 4th. Top boat from the home club was 'Fiddlesticks' with Tim Flatman and crew who came in 7th.

A special prize donated by New World Yacht Care went Douglas Guthrie sailing 'Vamonos' who, having left Helensburgh some weeks ago, sailed north around Scotland, down the east coast and through the Forth and Clyde Canal, to arrive back just in time to take part in the event.

The event was a huge effort of the organising team from Helensburgh Sailing Club, both on and off the water. But all the competitors headed home on Tuesday evening with big smiles after a fantastic few days of sailing, so, it was a job well done. A big thank-you to all involved and to the event sponsorsl Artemis Fund Managers, Babcock International Group, Craftinsure Boat Insurance, Tunnock's, and Advanced Asset Consultants. In addition, New World Yacht Care Chandlery at Rhu Marina set up the daily prize giving, and provided the day prizes for the fleet.
