PA Consulting Volvo RS Feva Nationals at Rutland Sailing Club - Overall

by Frances Peters 31 May 2015 20:15 BST 29-31 May 2015

Sunday morning and the final day of the PA Consulting RS Feva National Championships 2015 brought another rainy morning with strong winds forecast. Points were close and there was tension in the air as nervous teams headed to the water. With so many teams aiming for a finite number of top spots some were destined celebrations, while others would inevitably leave disappointed.

We caught up with Rory Odell and Joshua Bonsey in advance of the day. Going into the final series in 3rd position and with the points around them tight, the pair told us that they were hoping to at least maintain their 3rd position. They added that of course it would be nice to win, but that they could only do their best in each race and hope that it comes together for them.

Evidently enjoying the increase in breeze from yesterday, the Armstrong brothers wasted no time putting themselves back at the front, winning the first race ahead of Iain Bird & Jake Hardman and Odell and Bonsey.

Continuing their high from the first race, the Armstrong boys lead to the first mark for the second race of the day after the wind had begun to increase further. They didn't let go of their lead and left the next two, Bird & Hardman and Jack Lewis & Lucas Marshall in their wake.

The rain cleared but the wind stayed and still only half way through the final series, there was still everything left to gain or lose. Eager not to break the habit, the Armstrong brothers lead the charge to the windward mark once again and went on to take the gun for the race. Bird & Hardman and Daniel Lewis and Tristan Payne followed in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Armstrong's win meant that they had won the regatta overall with a race to spare while the fight remained hot behind them.

After 4 races today, Fin and Dan Armstrong took a heroic overall win to become 2015 RS Feva National Champions, after another day of perfect results. Ian Bird and Jake Hardman had a strong day which meant they finished the series in 2nd overall, followed by Rory Odell and Josh Bonsey who stayed true to their word and sailed a solid performance to maintain their position going into the final series. Meanwhile Daniel Lewis & Tristan Payne finished in 4th place, while Henry and Rupert Jameson took 5th place overall. Freya Black and Hatty Cage took the ladies trophy home after their success winning the ladies prize at the RS Feva European Championships just a week earlier. Leading the silver fleet overall was Tom Proffitt and Jess Flint, followed by Jack Miller & Lauren Bentley and Lorelei Bates & Felicity Allen.
