Lymington XOD fleet Wednesday Series Race 18

by Roy Froud 5 Sep 2014 08:22 BST 3 September 2014

A beautiful, sunny September afternoon with a nice but puffy easterly breeze greeted the 15 boats which turned out for Wednesday afternoon race 18.

After winning the pin end Rory Paton's XL made the most of a left hand shift to lead at the windward mark Solent Bank X after the long port tack leg from Martin Gee helming Mersa X34, these two and many of the following boats sailed too far against the tide. This allowed Barry Dunning helming Crumpet to take the lead from XL at mark D, Yacht Haven.

Few place changes happened on the port tack leg up to H "Paul Jackson" but a battle developed between John Olliff Cooper's Excalibur and XL which allowed Stuart Jardine's Lone Star to slip past both of them at the finish mark. Crumpet's crew were happy to toast her second race win in a row.

Race 18 Results: (top five)

1st Crumpet, Barry and Carol Dunning and Philip Shute
2nd Lone Star, Stuart Jardine, Andy Baker and Doug Rogerson
3rd Excalibur, John Olliff Cooper, Adrian Summers and Robert Young
4th XL, Rory Paton, Rodney Charman and Chris Sanders
5th Quest, James McGill and David Greadly
