Spitfire Open at Minnis Bay Sailing Club

Many fresh faces for the start of the Spitfire season © M Newbold

This weekend saw an interesting start to the season for the Spitfire fleet. A turnout of thirteen boats was an encouraging start especially with so many fresh faces.

Saturday saw some dubious weather in the form of fog and little wind, after some debate two races took place with a bearing given for the windward mark, with less than 50m visibility. Mike Scantlebury and David Harris took the first race after completing two laps, the second race was a close finish with Johnny Hutchings and Claire Mayell just crossing the line in front. Alex Farr and Marcelle Newbold took day one.

Day two saw much better visibility, bright sunshine but still little wind. A 10.30 start allowed plenty of time for recovery from the great hospitality of Minnis Bay Sailing Club. Two races also took place, with the third abandoned with lighter and lighter air. M Scantlebury and D Harris took both honours, leading almost from the start.

Next event – Eurocat, Carnac 28th April – 3rd May 2005
