Ecover Blue Mile on 8th June

Feel good and get active for World Oceans Day

The Ecover Blue Mile is taking place this summer, starting on World Oceans Day, 8th June – join in with thousands of people across the UK raising vital funds to support WWF’s work safeguarding our rivers, oceans, lakes and wetlands.

Andrew Triggs-Hodge, our rowing Olympic hopeful for London 2012, said “The Ecover Blue Mile is the perfect way for us to engage with our blue environment, from our oceans to our rivers and lakes. WWF does fantastic work safeguarding these habitats and protecting the species that depend on them. Through this event we can not only begin to appreciate the watery world around us, but also support WWF’s vital work through fundraising. And even better, it gives us the perfect excuse to get fit ahead of London 2012, and do something active with friends and family.”

Ecover is encouraging the nation to feel good and get active ahead of the London 2012 Olympics whilst enjoying the natural environment at the same time. The Ecover Blue Mile is an exciting outdoor event designed to get us actively caring for our rivers, oceans, lakes and wetlands. Our blue environments are remarkable places, and without them, there would be no life on Earth - they provide us with water to drink and food to eat, and what’s more they’re home to an astounding array of fish, animal and plant life.

To celebrate our blue environment, Ecover is urging people, local communities, schools, universities, organisations and sports groups all across the UK to organise their own Ecover Blue Mile event, in return for sponsorship from family and friends. Last year over 2,000 people took part, and this year we’re asking even more people to take part. And with World Oceans Day coming up on Friday 8 June, what better excuse to enjoy the blue outdoors! Protecting our rivers and oceans is now more important than ever. Oceans provide a home to half the species on Earth and help regulate the climate for the rest of us.

The best thing about it is that everyone can get involved, no matter what your age or fitness. You can complete your Blue Mile any way you want: swim or surf, kayak, stand up paddle, walk or run. Simply complete a mile in, or near your favourite watery place – whether a river, sea, lido or pool. All funds raised will go towards WWF’s water projects, supporting some of the most vulnerable wildlife, places and people - both here in the UK and around the world.
