Enterprise Open Meeting at Wigan Sailing Club

by Steve Blackburn 18 Oct 2011 10:13 BST 16 October 2011

As all eleven competitors arrived at a Wigan we was greeted with bacon butties and no wind. This delayed the start as we waited for the wind to arrive.

Race 1, the wind built up nicely a force 3 from a southwest direction. Steve Blackburn & Nick Hampson (Pilkington / WLYC) led to the windward mark. A few of the competitors hit weed as the approached the windward mark and halted their progress. Richard Critchley & Izzy Sowley (Pilkington) moved into 2nd. Dave & Beth Porter (WLYC) went round in third. As the race went on the windward mark with weed was causing problems for a few. Subsequently a few sailors retired. Steve went onto win the race, Dave came in 2nd and 3rd was Alison Payne and Kev Law (Toddbrook).

It was time for lunch with curry and rice or Hotpot, which was enjoyed by all. We soon set sail for race 2. Richard Critchley held out to port end of the line for the start and rounded in 1st and went onto to win the race. Dave again was in 2nd and Karen Brotherton and Lisa Woods in 3rd. Steve had a poor start and pulled his way to 2nd to throw it all away at the finish. Dave finished 2nd with the girls in 3rd and Steve 4th.

Race 3, The wind had dropped and move to a westerly as we got underway. This time Dave had the best start and went round the windward mark 1st Richard was 2nd and Tim Finch and Alex Dromgoole (Chester) in 3rd. A lot of people were hitting the odd patch of weed which was catching some of the sailors out. Steve & Karen sailed through the fleet to finish 3rd & 4th Dave came in 2nd, Dave was overtaken by Richard on the first run and Richard went on to win the Race and the Open.

A big thanks to Wigan SC for their time effort and great welcome.
