RC Laser Northern Travellers at West Lancashire Yacht Club

by Dave Fowler 1 Mar 2011 20:12 GMT 26 February 2011

This was Penultimate race in the Northern Winter Series, and we were joined by 5 Fiestas. Unfortunately, the wind proved too much for them. Nevertheless, it was an interesting experience and worth the effort.

This was also a first for the lasers with the new official ‘D’ sail from Out Their Technologies (the official sail maker for the RC Laser class), now making the John Tushingham sail grandfathered in the laser rules.

The wind was at the top end of the ‘C’ rig but quickly rose to the ‘D’ rig at this point it became too much for the Fiestas and they were nose diving all over the place. The lasers lapped up the conditions giving us some excellent racing. There was a lot of swapping of boats and the New ‘D’ rig was tried by many with the consensus, that is was as good if not a bit better than the JT sail. 15 races were sailed on an Olympic Course, the meeting finally went to Skip Reaser winning the last race of the day, to put him 1 point in front of Dave Fowler (who was videoing that race, darn it).

This was a good practice for the nationals which will be held here in May.

Overall Results:

1st 39, Skip Reaser
2nd 840, Dave Fowler
3rd 525, Andy Kissick

Big waves and gusty winds up to 35 knots As forecast, we would see winds from the SSW and starting at 15 knots. The direction SSW and with the gusts it felt more like 18-20kts. No question on rig size - the smallest D rig. Posted on 24 Feb

With a race within a race for the Johnson family The wind was blowing from the clubhouse direction for the ten RC Laser entries. It looked to be a stock 'B' rig all-dayer, but with the light patch at the entry point, a bit of extra sail cloth helps you get through the lulls. Posted on 6 Oct 2024
