Enteprise Open at Newbiggin by the Sea Sailing Club

On Sunday the 3rd of October Newbiggin by the sea sailing club held its annual Enterprise Open, a Speed Sails sponsored Cock of the North Event. As the Clubhouse was still in the throws of a rebuild, the clubhouse for the day was a marquee, a portaloo and a mobile kitchen thrown in for good measure. With the prospect of gales appearing at any time the OD opted to hold the first 2 races back to back.

Race 1 started on a southerly force 3/ 4 occasional gust of 5. After the 1st beat Lorry Young and Gerry Goodfellow from Tynemouth lead followed by Neil Ashurst / John Whittacker from Yeadon SC and David Jenkins / Kay Jenkins from South Shields sailing club. Ashurst and Whittacker took the lead afr the first series of reaches. This was looking to be the order in which they were going to finish until the penultimate beat when Ashurst and Whittacker decided to test the water after the windward mark, allowing Young and Goofellow into the lead and first blood of the opening meeting.

Race 2 started under similar conditions, this time Ashurst and Whittacker made no mistake and lead from start to finish. The battle for 2nd place was between the Jenkins and Young / Goodfellow, with the latter slowly whittling down the Jenkins lead then taking 2nd with a well read shift on the beat. This is how they then finished.

Race 3 was a keenly fought start for the remaining combatants, (the Jenkins had decided to call it a day due to cold and fatigue.

Once again Ashurst and Whittacker stamped their authority on the race leading from start to finish, followed by Young / Goodfellow then Wilde / Birch.
